요약

The population of the whole world is getting older and the whole world, sooner or later, will

have to manage the consequences. This is happening because birth rates have declined, or are

declining, almost everywhere, and additionally because older people are surviving to enjoy

longer lives. In most richer countries, birth and death rates started to decline in the 19th

century or earlier. In the case of Japan, this transition has been particularly rapid and did not

begin until the 20th century. In the poorer countries of the world, rapid declines in birth and

death rates have only emerged in the last few decades and in a few the process has not begun.

But most demographers believe that eventually the whole world will have few children, but

long lives.
