almost entirely by what amounts to a race between technological change and educational attainment. Technological change has increased the relative demand for skilled and educated workers, while access to education has increased the relative supply of skilled and educated individuals. And here’s the kicker: the big variable appears to be changes in the pace of educational attainment rather than changes in technological progress. The rise and decline of unions plays a supporting role in the story, as do immigration and outsourcing. But not much of a role. Stripped to essentials, the ebb and flow of wage inequality is all about education and technology.
