The African continent’s energy profile has the following features: Abundant energy resources in oil, gas, coal, and especially hydro potential –but which are unevenly distributed across the continent Underexploited energy resources and under- served demand, compared to the rest of the world: Africa has 15% of world population but only 3% of primary energy consumption Low access rates to basic energy services, especially in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), where access rates are barely 39% and throttle socio-economic development; A fragmented energy market; A low capacity to mobilize financing for investment, especially from private sources, due to low country and utility creditworthiness and high political risks; The lowest CO2 emissions per capita reflecting the low energy intensity of the economy as well as low per capita consumption levels; Only 125 GW of capacity in all Africa (comparable to the UK), of which 20% hydro (highest continent), in small, inefficient units Total power transmission system is only 90,000 km Gas and petroleum product pipeline system limited.
